If you think about the monikers we give city living, it doesn’t always paint a pretty picture – “rat race” or “urban jungle” are just two which immediately spring to mind. Therefore, if it is indeed true our city dwelling friends feature far less prominently on the “happy living” scale, we’d better start brainstorming ways to overcome this sadness. That’s because three out of every five Australians live in a Capital City meaning 60% of Australia’s population are at the risk of living unhappily ever after.
In this TEDx talk by author Charles Montgomery (Happy City), he discusses how it is possible to get urbanites to love and trust each other more, and therefore, boost their levels of contentment. Whether it be designing these areas differently and introducing more ribbons of nature into our city dwellers environments or approaching future construction by taking into account the emotional effect a building can have on a space, he certainly makes sense.
I invite anyone who has an interest in what ingredients it takes to infuse happiness into city living to watch this TEDx talk by Charles Montgomery. Feel free to then share your thoughts on whether you too agree there needs to be change to our urban zones to see happiness prosper.
